Tip 14

some\any - part 2

In the previous tip we learned that:

some = an undefined amount of something \ a certain amount of something.

any = whatever amount of something \ some amount of something \ zero amount or number of something.

Do you have any food? (Whatever amount, some amount).

Do you have some food? (A certain amount \ undefined amount).

I don’t have any time. (I have zero amount of time \ no time whatsoever).

Some languages do not have a direct and accurate translation for -some- and -any-

For that reason it is important to understand their meaning to help us use them correctly.

For this reason remember: do not try to translate these words from your own language. Instead learn their meaning from example and try mimicing how native English speakers use them.

Some

  • a certain amount of something that is not defined in clear number or measure.

Any

  • whatever amount- when used in a question
  • zero amount\number- when used in a negative sentence.

Good luck and see you in the next tip 🙂
